The Hardest Goodbye

Chapter One

Why doesn't he understand?

Why? Oh why?

In frustration, she kicked her legs, only to be startled by a loud "Yelp!" in return.

"Oh no! My poor baby! I'm so sorry," she apologised as she lifted up her 1-year-old Beagle and caressed him. He let out a soft whimper as her fingers reached the spot where she kicked him.

"Thinking about him again?"

She turned and saw her beloved mommy for a quarter of a century leaning by the doorway to her room. She rose and walked towards her and gave her a long hug.

"Oh mom! I'm going to miss you so much!"

She felt tears coming to her eyes again as she saw twinkles of tears by the sides of her mommy's eyes.

"Don't worry, darling, me and your dad are going to visit you as often as we can."

That seemed like a wonderful promise that might never come true, she thought. But she knew it could be possible too. Through the years, she saw how her parents, despite being moderately well-to-do financially, they worked very hard to provide her with all that she needed for her education. She still could not understand why education had to cost so much nowadays. Bloodsuckers! They are nothing but a bunch of money-crazy people who couldn't care less about people who forked out large sums of money for their children's education despite of their precarious financial situation. She wished she could do something about this nation's stupid education system. She wished she was someone important in the government who could change the education policy. But alas, that, has to wait.

The phone in her room rang.

They both looked at it, and then at each other simultaneously.

Her mom went over to pick it up when she didn't budge after 5 rings.

"It's Matt."

She hesitated and tried to come to a rationale why she should answer the phone. She was still angry at him. Why doesn't he understand? Couldn't he at least try to understand her? Is there any point talking to him at all?

Her mom was about to say something to Matt when she finally decided to walk over to the phone.

Before she could take her 3rd step, she felt the ceilings of her room came crashing down on her, and darkness seemed to envelop her from every possible angle that her eyes could envision. While the merciless pain reverberated in her head, she slowly slipped into unconsciousness.

Matt.......
